Typically, daily life (for me at least) is an absolute roller-coaster of emotions and drama. But the thing about recollections is that they are void of sentiments; in the end, what remains is a balance sheet of facts. So, as I sit down to summarize and reflect on, what I recall to be, a tumultuous year, I find that the facts would tend to say otherwise.
Finished PhD Qualifiers.
Finished PhD proposal. (officially a PhD candidate now)
Got a Masters' degree (in Civil Engineering).
[ This seemingly reverse order, believe it or not, is the order in which these things happened]
Presented a paper in EG-ICE conference in Vienna (also received the best paper award from 2012)
Presented a paper in ISARC conference in Montreál.
Had a journal paper published.
Had two algorithms from my time at Samsung patented.
Went to Nepal, Boston, Houston, New York.
Started tutoring sessions for Bhutanese refugees in Bellevue (which has died down since I went to Nepal).
Started advising on a not-for-profit for education innovation.
Trained for, and finished a 10 K in the Pitt Great Race (at a slightly embarrassing time of 60 minutes)
Won the CMU intramural indoor soccer tourney.
Started brewing (terrible) wine at home.
Next year (2014):
Get done with everything except thesis writing by December.
Write 3 journals, 1 build-sys paper.
Finish a half-marathon.
Finish the Insanity workout schedule.
Write something (/anything) everyday.
Be more regular at Guitar/ Sarangi playing (at least once a week).
Stop eating out.
